FIRST-TIMER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

New to Superfoods & Super Green Smoothies? We've got you covered.

Get ready to become your strongest, healthiest, most vibrant self. Excited for you to get started!

+ I'm new to this. What's the best product to start with?

In that case, congratulations for taking this first step to stepping up your super health! We highly recommend to start with our Superfood StarterPacks, which include the essentials that you will need to get started on your daily, supercharged Green Smoothies.

Our rockin' Superfood StarterPacks start at only Php999 for 4 Superfoods already (Sampler size). But if you want an extra boost of Vitamin C (Camu Camu) or Protein (Spirulina), you can level up and get the Solo or Family sizes that have 5 Superfoods in a set, at Php1,500 and Php2,900, good for 1.5-2 months and 3-4 months, respectively.

Everything is natural, organic, and 100% plant-based. Recipe template also included.

+ What's the difference between StarterPack A and B?

A has Camu Camu, which is the highest natural source of Vitamin C. B has Spirulina, which is the highest natural source of protein. Should you prefer to get both, we recommend to get one in a StarterPack (less quantity) and another one individually (more quantity).

+ What's the difference between the Sampler, Solo, and Family sizes?

The Sampler size is good for about 1 month, assuming 1-2 servings of Super Green Smoothies day (can be shared, or can just be consumed by one person, depending on how much you consume). The Solo size has one more extra Superfood (Camu Camu if A and Spirulina if B), is about 50% more in quantity than the Sampler size, and is good for 1.5 to 2 months. The Family size is double the Solo size, good for 3 to 4 months.

+ How do we use your rockin' Superfoods? Any recipes?

Making a Super Green Smoothie is easy! Simply blend fresh leafy greens (like kangkong, talbos ng kamote, kale, saluyot, spinach , etc.), fresh fruits, and Superfoods. A recipe template is included in your Superfood StarterPack. Plus, we have an upcoming Free SUPER GREEN SMOOTHIE QUICK START GUIDE eBook you can sign up for. Aaand, we also have free green smoothie recipes available in our website (with more to come!).

We also take you through the step by step on How to Make a Super Green Smoothie here.

+ What other ingredients will I need?

While waiting for your first Superfood StarterPack to arrive, you can already prepare the other ingredients you will need: namely, fresh leafy greens and fruits from your nearby grocery or palengke (market). Download your Beginner's Grocery List for Green Smoothies here. You can download it in PDF format to view in mobile or tablet, ready to take with you.

+ I'd love to attend your Workshops! How do I sign up?

Our much raved-about, eye-opening GOING SUPER Learning Workshop is a must attend! Check out raves from past attendees here. To stay updated on our next schedule (as they're often sold out fast), sign up here. We'd love to have you there!

+ Are Super Green Smoothies okay for kids?

Kids love their Super Green Smoothies! It's basically like drinking fresh fruits and vegetables, and you should take as many glasses of these as you can in a day. Just limit your Maca and Spirulina to lower doses, such as 1/8 teaspoon and 1/16 to 1/8 teaspoon respectively. When making a big batch, these Superfoods are also distributed and lessened in dosage, so this has not been a big issue for moms based on experience.

+ Is this safe for pregnant women?

Although pregnant Aztec women have been using Maca for thousands of years, there are no medical studies on Superfoods (i.e. Maca) and pregnant women so far, so experts caution about this. However, we do strongly recommend taking green smoothies (with less or no added Superfoods), especially for pregnant women who are nourishing not only themselves, but also their little ones. Green smoothies are bursting with life, powerful phytonutrients, and fiber straight from nature. At the end of the day, nothing can replace the power of plants in their fresh, whole form.

+ What can I take for breast feeding or to increase my milk supply?

We can recommend Malunggay, Chlorella and Spirulina, mixed with daily green smoothies. We also have      a podcast interview with a lactation consultant on how to increase your breast milk supply which be              found here, you can also listen to it on your android or ios phone.

+ Can this be a meal replacement? Is this for weight loss?

In terms of our body's biochemical (nutrients) and mechanical (volume via fiber) needs, yes, a Super Green Smoothie is oftentimes superior to the conventional meals of nutrient-empty white rice and animal-based viands (ulam) cooked in oil (and with little or no veggies) and can serve as an excellent meal, provided that you have enough of it (since fruits and veggies are low in calories). To give you an idea, we take about one liter per serving per person for breakfast (But take your time, the amount of Super Green Smoothies you will take will also increase naturally).

We do not advocate using Superfoods as quick fixes or magic pills and we always stress on the importance of excellent nutrition. When it comes to weight loss, this is a natural result of nourishing yourself excellently (and a Super Green Smoothie is one of the easiest ways to do that). When your body is satisfied in terms of nutrients and fiber, you will crave less and not over eat (Ever experienced eating a big meal with 3 cups of white rice only to find yourself hungry again and craving a few hours later?). You will also be excellently nourished from the high volume of fruits and veggies that you're taking in and you will naturally gain energy to want to exercise, build muscle, and burn fat. Also, when people shifting to a plant-based or cleaner lifestyle find that they lose significant weight immediately within the first month (e.g. 20 lbs), this is usually the excess water maintained by the body to suspend toxins from being in contact with our organs. When you eat clean and boost your plant-based foods, you will no longer need the excess water to suspend toxins, and yes, weight loss naturally does occur.

For more inspiration, check out our interview of our friend Nicole Tope and how she lost 100 lbs by eating as much as she wanted on nutrient-rich diet of fruits and veggies. For more on cravings, weight loss, and how a Super Green Smoothie best addresses this, check out our informative article on How to Conquer Cravings Without Will Power.

+ When is the best time to take my Super Green Smoothies?

Super Green Smoothies are best taken on their own or at least 20-30 minutes before other meals so that digestion won't be slowed down by other foods in a conventional diet that take longer to digest (rice, animal foods, oil, etc.), which oftentimes result in temporary bloating. But if you find it more convenient for you to use this as a substitute for your typical beverage in meals, then go for what works for you.

Since Super Green Smoothies are packed with nutrients and fiber, you may also find that you are already full and satisfied after having a big serving (We take about 32 oz / 1 liter / 2 tall glasses per serving, but take your time and just gradually build your way up), so you can definitely take it on its own (If you feel hungry, up your volume). Most people also love taking this for breakfast to start their day (you can also bring a jug of this with you -- it only takes 2 minutes to make) or as a mid-day superboost instead of binging on junk food or caffeine to re-energize.

+ What's the difference between blending green smoothies & juicing?

Juicing and blending both have their benefits. Juicing, where you use a juicer to extract the liquid only, allows you to take in a higher dosage of nutrients in less time, without being slowed down by fiber. This is particularly beneficial if you are sick or recovering. Blending, on the other hand, as in green smoothies, includes the whole fruit, including the fiber. Although juicing has its benefits, nothing can replace fruits and veggies in their whole form, as fiber slows down the absorption of sugar from the fruits, cleanses / detoxes the body, and keeps you full longer.

Superfoods can be used in both green smoothies and juices, though they are mixed best (dissolved properly) when using a blender.

+ I'm new to this. Anything important I should take note of?

Ease your way in, start slow. If you have too much too soon, particularly for Maca, you may react similar to allergic reactions (dizziness, mild palpitations, tightening throat, nausea, acid reflux). For Spirulina, too much too soon may send you to the bathroom (painlessly) as it has a cleansing effect. Start slow. For Maca, start with 1/4 teaspoon a day for the first 2-3 days. Our recommended daily dose is between 1/4 to 1 teaspoon a day (higher when dealing with days with higher stress, like a competition, for example, as Maca is a natural stress adaptogen). For Spirulina, start with 1/16 to 1/8 teaspoon, and increase gradually as you get used to this. That aside, their benefits are excellent! We have a multitude of testimonials from our very happy Supercharged users in our products section (and we have a lot more that we haven't even included there!). Benefits include more energy, waking up feeling energized, less cravings (from superior nourishment), faster recovery, balanced hormones (no more menstrual cramps for women & milder menopausal symptoms), glowing skin, super immunity from disease, and an overall Supercharged, more vibrant you.

+ What experiential benefits should I be expecting when I adopt Super Green Smoothies as a habit?

As you adopt a large serving of Super Green Smoothies into your daily habit, you will be experiencing, among others:

+How do Super Green Smoothies benefit me as an athlete? How can this give me energy?

When it comes to energy, it’s not how much we take in, but how much we have left.
Interestingly, digestion is one of the most energy-consuming activities our body goes through on a regular basis. When we take in foods that are more challenging to process, such as low fiber and low nutrient animal-based, oil-based, and processed foods, our body has to work extra hard to break this down. Instead of giving us added energy, most people feel sleepy and sluggish after a big conventional meal (Something we rarely ever experience now). Not only is the body physically stressed from exercise, it is also nutritionally stressed from digestion, resulting in less net energy available for recovery.
On the other hand, raw fruits and vegetables (as in a Super Green Smoothie) are nutrient-rich, fiber-rich, and easy for the body to digest and absorb, freeing up more net energy available.
For athletes, excellent nutrition is key for recovery. When we eat nutrient-rich raw fruits and vegetables, we add to the living enzymes of our body and free up more energy after digestion. This energy can be used now for more functional purposes such as rebuilding muscles and recovering faster, allowing us to train more.
Some of the best athletes in the world are 100%  powered by plants, including ultrarunner Scott Jurek (the only man to closely beat Tarahumara legend Arnulfo Quimare, conquering Death Valley and holding a record of 6.5 full marathons in a day), Serena Williams (who recovered from her previously ‘incurable’ disease through raw food to make a comeback and win the Wimbledon 2011 with her sister Vanessa), triathlete Brendan Brazier, Ultraman Rich Roll, and Mike Tyson. For more on plant-based nutrition for athletes, you can also check out Ralph’s Interview on Training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a Filipino Plant-Based Athlete here.

+Is this safe for Diabetics?

Yes, Super Green Smoothies are safe for diabetics. In fact, increasing one’s intake of fruits and vegetables and is the best way to protect oneself from diseases such as diabetes.
Understandably, most diabetics have concerns about consuming (sweet) fruits as it would increase their blood sugar. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can start by substituting bananas with saba and increasing your greens in proportion to your fruits to still make taking a higher volume of leafy veggies and fruits more convenient for you.
Glycemic index is how fast the carbohydrates you eat turns into sugar. Most fruits actually have low glycemic indices, while others, such as bananas and mangoes, have medium to high glycemic indices. However, more than glycemic index alone, what is more important is the glycemic load, which also takes into consideration the amount of carbohydrates consumed. As it turns out, all fruits have low glycemic load (aside from being low calorie, it also has fiber that naturally slows down the release sugar in our body).
It is also important to note that recent studies show that it is not the “sweetness” of food that cause diabetes. Sugar is not the problem. The problem is that this sugar (which our cells need to thrive) have difficulty entering our cells due to cellular fat clogging it, which is from saturated fats that are only from animal foods and some vegetable oils (Cellular fat is different from body fat, which is why some diabetics may also be skinny). As a result, the sugar is left outside the cells, in the bloodstream, causing “high blood sugar”.
Our bodies are meant to consume a high volume of nutrient-rich and fiber-rich fruits (and we do have a naturally sweet tooth for a reason – as cakes, pastries, and ice cream do not exist in nature; when we crave, we are imbalanced and may be craving the nutrients found in fruits). The problem with diabetes is not that we are consuming too much sugar, it is because our body can’t process it properly due to reasons such as the fat blocking the cells.
For further reading, we highly recommend that you check out the research of Dr. Neal Bernard, who is one of the leading experts in curing diabetes through food, and his book “Reversing and Preventing Diabetes”. Here is a link of Dr. Neal Bernard explaining the causes of Diabetes. We also have a blog post at The Superfood Grocer Learn Page where we discuss the Top 5 Things You Must Know About Diabetes.

+Do my fruits and vegetables need to be organic?

We always encourage people to do the best that they can. If organic produce is available to you and this is within your budget, go for this. If you have built relationships with farmers and can get access to organic produce, pursue this. If you can grow your own food, even better.
However, not having access to organic produce should not hinder you from taking in your fruits and vegetables at all. Do what you can. Do not let vague fear cripple you. The benefits of incorporating a high volume of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet far outweighs not taking them at all.
Despite the reality of toxins in small doses in our food, “no scientist believes that this means that we should reduce our consumption of vegetation.”
Every study done to date on the consumption of food and its relation to cancer has shown that the more fruits and vegetables people eat, the less cancer and heart disease they have. All these studies were done on people eating conventionally grown, not organic, produce.
Although we now that have adopted an organic supply, when Carmela’s mom, who is reversing her diabetes, started, she did so with only fruits and vegetables from the nearby conventional grocery. The results are still achieved.
Our bodies are naturally built to defend itself from small doses of toxins. Humans and other animals are exposed to small amounts of naturally occurring toxins even with every mouthful of organically grown, natural food. The body normally breaks down self-produced metabolic wastes and naturally occurring carcinogens in foods as well as pesticides, and excretes these harmful substances.
If you are concerned about pesticides and chemicals, keep in mind that animal products, including dairy, contain the most toxic pesticide residues. Dioxin, which is predominantly found in fatty meats and dairy products, is one of the most potent toxins linked to several cancers in humans. By basing your diet on unrefined plant foods, you automatically reduce your exposure to the most dangerous chemicals.
You can also peel your fruits and remove the outmost layer of lettuce. Also wash your produce before consuming.
We are champions of organic plant-based foods and we support fellow Filipino farmers through our local organic products. We are also looking into more ways we can make these more accessible to all. Nonetheless, taking a higher volume of your fruits and vegetables – given the best you can do – is the most important learning we wish for you to take with you.
Do what you can and be proud of yourself for taking these steps. Take it one step at a time. Who knows? Maybe by next year, you’ll already be planting in your own backyard.
Go for it!
